JOB DESCRIPTION:

Qualification:

Education & Experience

  1. A degree or diploma from an Australian institution or a comparable overseas qualification which is appropriate to the duties. OR; A degree of Doctor of Philosophy of an Australian university or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties.

  2. A very good understanding of extreme weather and the physical processes that cause them in the Australian region and beyond. This includes knowledge of major hazard types such as extreme temperatures, rainfall and/or winds, as well as the factors influencing Australian climate including naturally occurring climate variability and human induced climate change.
  3. Flexibility to work effectively and productively as a member of a team under the direction of more senior scientists, and an ability to plan and undertake research and to publish research results.
  4. Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to write science papers, work plans, present work orally, and translate science outcomes in ways which can be understood by nonexpert audiences.
  5. Excellent analytical and scientific programming skills, including extensive experience with LINUX (preferably in a high-performance computing environment), and with scientific and visualisation languages including Python.


Job Responsibility:

  1. Undertake original research and associated development in the area of extreme weather and climate events including publishing results in the scientific literature.

  2. Deliver practical science-based solutions in response to identified customer or organisational needs, including supporting innovation which delivers greater impact and value from Bureau Services.
  3. Work with clients, sponsors, and stakeholders of the Bureau's Research Program to understand their needs, develop proposal to address scientific and technical gaps, and drive innovation and scientific advancement with measurable impact and value.
  4. Provide scientific advice to Bureau leaders and senior scientists and support them in delivering Team and Section plans and priorities.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to the Bureau Way along with the APS Values and Code of Conduct
  6. Comply with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
